In a nut shell here are the key pros and cons for the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven:

PROS

  • Succulent, juicy, perfectly cooked food every time you use it!
  • Quiet
  • Contains no moving parts that can break
  • Has offset handles so you can pour the water out easily after use
  • Easy to use and easy to clean
  • Comes with a chart with sous vide cooking times and temperatures

CONS

  • This unit houses a lot of water and can take a while to warm up in comparison to an immersion circulator like the popular Anova Sous Vide immersion circulator

  • Takes up a bit of space (although is smaller than the other sous vide water oven offered by SousVide Supreme)
  • A little heavy
  • The water bath itself can develop hard-water scale deposits
What does a sous vide water oven do?
A sous vide water oven is an electronically powered device that heats water. This self-contained water oven allows you to set a specific temperature at which you can cook food. Simply place food into vacuum sealed bags and then immerse them in the water bath at a stable temperature for a specific period of time. Cooking in this temperature-controlled water bath avoids overcooking and locks in flavor and juiceiness. Hello, amazing restaurant style results…every time you use the sous vide water oven!!

A sous vide water oven is a stand-alone product. You fill the water oven with water, pop your vacuum sealed food into the sous vide oven and set a timer for it to cook.  Sous vide ovens do that up a little space in your kitchen so it is important to check the size or “footprint” of the sous vide water oven before you purchase one.

Sous Vide Demi vs Supreme

SousVide Supreme has 2 sous vide water ovens. The SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven is smaller than the other sous vide oven in the range which is simply called the SousVide Supreme Water oven. The Demi is smaller than the Supreme and is also less expensive. The table below clearly outlines the difference between the 2 water oven models:

Sous Vide Supreme vs Anova Culinary Sous Vide Precision Cooker

The major difference between the SousVide Supreme sous vide water baths and the Anova Culinary Sous Vide Precision Cooker is that they are two completely different kitchen gadgets. The SousVide Supreme sous vide oven is an all in one kitchen gadget. You do not need to use any other kitchen appliances or equipment for your sous vide cooking when you use a sous vide oven. Whereas the Anova Culinary Sous Vide Precison Cooker requires you to use a kitchen pot or larger water container as your water bath and comes with no in-built racks, water balls, lids or any other sous vide accessories.

The SousVide Supreme water oven has a much larger footprint than the Anova Sous Vide Precision Cooker so you need to measure up to make sure you have room for it on your counter top (and in your kitchen cupboard if you plan to store it between uses). There is also a fairly large cost variance, with the Anova Precision Cooker being much cheaper than SousVide Supreme sous vide ovens.

DETAILED SOUS VIDE HUB REVIEW

PERFORMANCE

The majority of people who use the sous vide supreme Demi Water oven are extremely happy with its performance. It carries the usual hallmarks of cooking in the sous vide style delivering delicious, juicy, succulent food EVERY time you use it. Reviewers rave about the CONSISTENT results they get. Even very inexperienced cooks are able to create delicious results with this water oven at their side in the kitchen.

There is a little disparity in the reviewer community about the accuracy of the holding temperature of this oven. Some say it performs just as the brand claims (accurate to 1 degree Fahrenheit or 0.5 degrees Celsius). To make sure your water oven is accurate use a thermometer at first to make sure your water oven is holding a consistent temperature during the cook.

This water oven can hold approximately twelve 4 ounce portions of food. Most people report that the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven can support 6-8 portions but of course this will vary depending on your family’s appetite and usual portion sizes!

The dimensions of the actual cooking area inside the SousVide Supreme Demi Water oven are 8 ½” x 11″. If you want to cook anything wider than that, we would suggest you consider the SousVide Supreme (not the Demi) which can hold twenty 4 ounce portions of food.

EASE OF USE/CONVENIENCE

As far as the unit itself is concerned, this water oven is a little heavy. It also takes up a fair amount of bench space. We recommend you grab a piece of paper or two, measure out the footprint of this unit (approximately 10″ x 12″) and place it on various parts of your kitchen bench to see where it will fit best.

Many people prefer to leave the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven on their bench at all times given they use it frequently. If you plan to put it away in your cupboard between uses, take into consideration that is can be a little heavy to carry and you will need a large amount of space in your cupboard to store it.

In comparison to immersion circulators, water ovens are fully self contained. You do not need to purchase a separate lid or find an appropriate water vessel to use with it. You simply pop your food portions in vacuum sealed bags into the water oven once the desired water temperature has been reached.

Reviewers report that this water oven is super easy to clean. In addition, reviewers love that you can use the lid as a tray to carry the bags of food over to where the meat will be finished off before serving.

DESIGN

Many people leave the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven on their benchtops. This is because they use them a number of times a week. Whilst this unit is not a work of art, it’s styling is contemporary and it comes in three colors; black, red and white.

The touch screen panel on this water oven is not universally loved. Commons gripes include that you have to hold the buttons down for a long time before they respond, the on/off button is a little small and the screen panel itself is a little flimsy. Others report that the screen panel itself presses in at times when they touch it.

The SousVide Demi Water Oven has a coated steel colored exterior and a polished aluminium lid. The interior is made from anondized aluminium. There has been a limited amount of feedback from reviewers that they have experienced some corrosion of the lid and also some hard-water scale deposits left in the water bath after use.

WARRANTY AND SUPPORT

SousVide Supreme offer a risk-free purchase with a 90-Day Money Back Satisfaction Guarantee in place.

Customer support from SousVide Supreme is reported to be excellent. Those who have had queries in relation to their water oven and/or have had reasons to return it, have reported a quick and efficient customer service response.

SousVide Supreme offer a range of recipe videos on YouTube as well as having a Facebook page, an Instagram account and a Twitter account. This means you can stay in touch with the sous vide community as you start to use your SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven.

HINTS AND TIPS FROM REAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE USED THE SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven

Here are some first hand hints and tips from people who have used the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven:

Tip #1

If you have the room, pop the SousVide Supreme Demi Water Oven on your kitchen counter near the sink. That way you don’t have to haul it too far to fill or empty it. Fill it to the minimum level, then top it off, using a pitcher, once you have the food inside.

Tip #2

Don’t throw out the liquids left in the bag after your cook. They give you a perfect base for a sauce you can make while the meat rests.

Tip #3

If you need a little extra fat (like with a turkey breast, etc.), just add in a tablespoon or so of butter or duck fat into your food pouch.

Tip #4

Consider seasoning and sealing up raw food items, then freeze them. After thawing in the fridge, they can be put right into the SousVide Supreme water oven when you are ready to use them.

Tip #5

If you are having trouble with your food pouch floating to the surface of the water bath, use a big, heavy stainless spoon on top of the bag once submerged to keep it under the water.

Tip #6

Consider buying the rack that comes with the larger model if you are keen to cook more portions than the Universal Pouch Rack that this model holds
